At this Endeavour Drive home in Ocean Grove, Nick and his team replaced an old gravel driveway with exposed aggregate concrete that runs all the way around the house and joins the garage. The biggest task was getting the levels right across such a long, connected area so every join finished seamlessly. The result is a durable surface for vehicles, easier access around the property, and a front yard that has been completely transformed.
Before: The Problem with the Old Gravel Driveway
Before the work started, the property had a gravel driveway and unsealed ground around the house. Loose gravel moves around under daily vehicle use, and the bare areas beside the house gave no firm, even surface to walk on.
In wet weather, unsealed ground can turn soft and messy, which makes the yard harder to keep tidy. It also left the front of the home looking unfinished, with nothing tying the house, driveway and garage together.
The owners wanted durable vehicle access, an easier way to get around the property, and a finish that looked complete without needing much upkeep.
Project Details: How We Transformed the Driveway and Path
The goal was a new concrete driveway and surrounding area that would handle everyday use and read as one finished surface from the street through to the garage.
Preparing the Site
Careful preparation is a big part of how Nick approaches every job. Excavation, base preparation, formwork, levels and drainage all need to be considered before any concrete is poured, and this job was no different. Timber formwork was set out to shape the area as it wraps around the house and to establish the edges and finished heights. With the forms in place, steel reinforcing mesh was laid across the full area and raised on bar chairs, so it sits within the concrete rather than on the base below.

Getting the Levels and Joins Right
Getting the levels right was the main challenge on this job. The new concrete extends all the way around the house and connects to the garage, so the surface had to flow smoothly across a long, continuous area and meet the garage without a step or lip. Nick and his team set the levels through the formwork before the pour, working out how each section would meet the next so the joins finished seamlessly. Setting the falls at this stage is also what directs water away from the house rather than toward it, which avoids one of the common driveway and path defects that trace back to levels being missed before the pour.
One Finish Across the Whole Area
Exposed aggregate concrete was used throughout, giving the driveway and the areas around the house the same textured surface and clean appearance. One continuous finish ties the property together, and it’s a low-maintenance option for a coastal home in daily use. For owners thinking about longer-term care, our guide to sealing driveways, pathways and patios covers how sealing fits into upkeep.

The Finished Result
The new concrete has completely transformed the front yard. The owners now have durable vehicle access, a clean concrete pathway around the house, and a finish that looks complete from the street. The change inspired them to add new landscaping, and they’re proud of the home they come back to each day.
